Disabled American Veterans Big D Chapter 57 meets every first Saturday at 1 p.m. at 8630 Thurgood Lane for discussions and lunch. Meetings include various activities, presenters and topics. The SPCA of Texas runs an injured animal rescue ambulance service to help strays. SPCA will respond to calls in our neighborhood from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Field officers evaluate injured animals and take them to the SPCA, Highland Park Animal Clinic or an emergency clinic for treatment. 214.651.7387.

T.C. Marsh Middle School’s Army Junior ROTC is seeking financial donations to help cover the cost of program growth, competition expenses and replacement of older equipment. More than 200 students are enrolled in the school’s junior ROTC program. The group is self funded, typically raising $10,000 each year. An additional $5,000 is needed. Dallas Independent School District (DISD) presented its Outstanding Youth Organization Partner award to W.T. White High School boys varsity basketball team and Nathan Adams Elementary School. The basketball team and its coach, Craig Bankhead, have volunteered at Nathan Adams every Wednesday afternoon for two years. DISD honored volunteers and partners during its 38th annual Partners in Education recognition luncheon recently. Volunteers contributed roughly 185,677 hours of service to Dallas students during the 2006-2007 school year.

 

W.T. White’s Marine Corps Junior ROTC placed second overall in Texas, competing against 40 other schools. Additionally, it won third place for exhibition, second for inspection, first for regulation and first overall for armed drill team; first for inspection, first for procedures, best commander and first overall for female color guard; second for procedures, second for inspection and second overall for male color guard; first regulation, third inspection and second overall for unarmed drill team; third overall for orienteering; and first overall for Sari Hernandez, orienteering female division. In the Bess Southwestern Drill competition, the team placed first in three categories and third in five categories.

 

W.T. White High School’s choir has been selected for the second consecutive year as the best choir in Dallas ISD. In district competition this spring, judges selected W.T. White over 23 other high schools.

 

W.T. White’s Caballeras squad is seeking financial donations to fund 40 members’ tuition to SMU dance camp in June. Members who cannot afford to pay will not be able to attend without assistance. W.T. White junior Chris Weachock was presented with the People’s Choice Award for his pastel entry in the Congressional Art Contest. The event was sponsored by United States Rep. Pete Sessions. Chris was awarded $100 and his art will be displayed in the congressman’s Dallas office.

Fifty-nine DISD seniors are financial scholarship recipients awarded by Dallas superintendent Michael Hinojosa during a recent reception at SMU. Newly minted W.T. White High School graduates Lindsay Drane and Katrina Schirm each received $2,000 funded by proceeds from the annual Superintendent’s Scholarship Golf Classic. Scholarships are given in recognition of outstanding community service, academic achievements and good character.  

Neighborhood resident Benjamin Hamid-Khani was recognized by Austin College in its recent academic honors societies’ convocation ceremony. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, Honor Society. Hamid-Khani is the son of Rebecca and Saeed Hamid-Khani.
