U.S. Army Sgt. Greg Owens, a 2002 Hillcrest graduate, was killed while serving in Afghanistan this week. The U.S. Department of Defense released a statement saying that his troop came under enemy fire after their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. Four U.S. soldiers were killed during that attack.
When Owens attended Hillcrest, he was the band’s drum major. He enlisted in 2007, and he was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. He was 24 years old.
