It’s refreshing to see a new local business pop up in the old shopping center at the northeast corner of Forest and Inwood that often seems to have more way more parking spaces than people. The lot was full last Thursday when I stopped by to try  Liberty Burger that opened Monday. You can spot the huge neon green sign from the other side of the Tollway.

The concept comes from Mariel Street, daughter of Dallas restauranteur Gene Street who started chains like Black Eyed Pea, Cantina Laredo.

The cool thing about this burger joint is that you get a choice of several different meats besides beef. There’s bison, turkey, veggie and lamb. The menu also includes specialty burgers that cost a bit more. I stuck with the beef and ordered the regular Liberty Burger ($5) with cheese and a side of sweet potato fries.

The buns are nice and fluffy (even a bit flaky), and the patties aren’t too greasy. In a weird way, the Liberty Burger tastes pretty clean. But it is still a burger, and the sweet potato fries are like crack.

All in all, it’s a nice spot for a filling lunch, and a great addition in our neighborhood. Between Scotty P’s and Elevation Burger, we’re not overloaded with burger joints (yet).
