To make it to one of the best restaurants in town, you would have had to make reservations a long time ago. Besides lavish dinners and expensive getaways, here are few other ideas for a cheap date on Feb. 14 right here in the neighborhood.

Whole Foods at Preston and Forest hosts a red wine and dark chocolate tasting 5:30-7:30 p.m. The store is celebrating the American Heart Association (1 percent of net sales benefit the organization all day). The Keith Brown Jazz Quartet will serenade as you sample chocolate and wine. The best part? It’s free. Be sure to reserve a spot though.

Give something back on Valentine’s Day by attending the Give Love Give a Home community fair for Foster Kids Charity, a nonprofit started by Preston Hollow resident Michelle Armour. The event includes live entertainment, community service activities, a raffle, Zumba, a bounce house and other fun stuff. It runs 5-7:30 p.m. at Valley View Center.

If you’re a member of Sunstone Yoga, or know someone who is, get in on the studio’s free day of yoga on Valentine’s Day.

Get crafty with mosaics. Take your partner up to Smashing Times at Preston and Royal to make your own heart-shaped gifts. Prices start at $10 for small items and go up from there. This stuff isn’t just for kids. Walk-ins are welcome.

Express your love for nature. The Dallas Sierra Club hosts a free program For the Love of Nature at 7 p.m. at REI, which includes a series of presentations about the group’s activities. At the end, there’s an open mic session for anyone to come up and talk about why they love nature. Refreshments included.

It’s not cheap, but check out this listing on Guidlive: If you pop the question at Ristorante Nicola in Preston Hollow on Feb. 14, you receive a complimentary dinner. Well, in that case … But couples still have to pay $89 to get in.
