Photos and story by Photo Editor Danny Fulgencio

In March 2012 we tackled the controversial momentum of turning Dallas into a bike-friendly city. Preston Hollow resident Waco Moore argued for a peaceful coexistence between cyclists and motorists on our streets.

To make the shot, Waco and I met near Preston and Northwest Highway during rush hour. Admittedly, I was probably more nervous than he as I set up a flash and photo umbrella on the median. (It’s not often that I make environmental portraits with traffic zipping just a few feet from my head.)

I shot with a tripod-mounted camera set at ISO 100, f/22 and used a slow shutter speed of about 1/3 of a second. I asked Waco to hold very still to make sure he remained in sharp focus. Then it was just a matter of timing.

One third of a second is generally much too slow to hand-hold a camera, so by using the tripod I was able to communicate the illusion of movement as vehicles passed while Waco remained frozen in the photo.
