Withers Elementary PTA president Becky Heller, inspired by programs such as the First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move’ campaign, is spearheading a new mission for the 2013-2014 school year called Wildcats for Wellness.

The initiative aims to improve the all-being, health, and educational outcomes of Withers Elementary students, while teaching them healthy habits that will serve them into adulthood.

Parents, community members, faculty, and school administrators will collaborate to achieve the goals of the initiative, which include expanding Withers’ award-winning school garden and restructuring events such as Wither’s annual cookie dough fundraiser.

Withers Elementary’s new principal for the 2013-2014 school year, Connie Wallace, is excited about the new initiative. (Wallace replaces former principal Andrea Cockrell, who led the school for four years and is now the principal of Plano ISD’s Jackson Elementary.)

Wallace says that although Withers Elementary has a record of academic success, the school also is “committed to preparing the whole child.”

“Withers has already proven its incredible ability to blaze new trails, with the success of programs like the two-way dual language program, which boasts the only waiting list of any DISD non-magnet school,” Wallace says. “I believe Wildcats for Wellness holds similar potential.”
