Hillcrest cheerleaders pose with alumni at Hillcrest High: Jun Ma

  • On Friday and Saturday, all Hillcrest High alumni are invited to the 75th anniversary celebration at Hillcrest High School. The valedictorian of Hillcrest’s first graduating class of 1939, 92-year-old Alice Stiff Raley is the honorary grand marshal of the homecoming parade, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening. Stay for the homecoming football game as the Panthers take on Thomas Jefferson High School at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday at 11 a.m., an assembly in the Hillcrest auditorium features congratulations from several prominent city officials. From 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m., alumni can purchase lunch from food trucks in the Hillcrest parking lot, mingle with their classmates, play pick-up games of softball and basketball, or dance to music from a DJ. A bounce house and face-painting will be available for the kids, with plenty of volunteers supervising and directing activities. Read more about the unique anniversary event in our October magazine here.

  • Come to CenterPark at the NorthPark Center for a free family day of fun on Saturday from noon-3 p.m. Kid-friendly activities include musicians, balloon artists, carnival games, and jugglers. The event raises funds to benefit the research programs of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy and to give kids with Duchenne muscular dystrophy a chance to do the things that kids are supposed to do. Read more about Sam’s story and how Sam’s Day has helped to raise $1 million for research since 2005 here.

  • See some cool art made from thousands of cans of food by Dallas architects and engineers all weekend long at NorthPark Center. The various “can sculptures” throughout the mall are for a contest held by nonprofit Canstruction. The contest runs through Oct. 20 and will generate more than 1 million pounds of food for the North Texas food bank.
