televisionAs I write this I am disturbed by the amount of busted and outdated electronic gadgets and phones lurking in my closets. Do they even make answering machines anymore?

I keep telling myself I will sell my old electronic junk on eBay. Other days, I hope maybe something like the tooth fairy (a computer fairy?) will come to untangle the cords and I will wake up one morning knowing exactly where my headphones are…

But sometimes it’s just time to load up the stuff and ditch it. And not only because there isn’t room for anything else in your closet.

The EPA estimates that the U.S. discards 400 million pieces of e-waste each year. Electronic waste contains an array of toxic materials, including lead, mercury, and brominated flame-retardants. The U.S. EPA estimates that over 80% of our e-waste is trashed in American landfills and incinerators, where it can contaminate our air, water and land.

Luckily, Snappy Salads and Recycle Revolution are teaming up to help with this conundrum by hosting an “Electronic Waste Recycling Roundup.”

Simply drive to Snappy Salads on Preston and Forest Oct. 19 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Workers on site will help transfer electronics from your vehicle to the collection truck. All items will be recycled according to the standards of e-stewards.

Snappy Salads is relying on the expertise of Recycle Revolution, a local Dallas company, to coordinate the recycling of the collected items and to ensure that all items are sent to facilities here in the United States.

“I am personally looking forward to this day because I have quite a few items that I’ll be able to get out of my garage and into the hands of someone who will properly recycle the components,” says Chris Dahlander, founder and CEO of Snappy Salads.

Items eligible to be recycled include computers, televisions, monitors, laptops, cell phones, VCRs, stereos, copiers, printers, video games, fax machines, calculators, as well as small appliances and batteries. Anything that has an on/off switch will be accepted.
