Often times, the best recipes are the ones passed down through generations.

Our December 2010 issue compiled a few holiday recipes and stories from neighborhood residents. Grandmother Virginia’s chocolate pie — five generations old — is “so simple a sixth-grader can make it.” Brian Doebele’s Buccioloni recipe began with a rocking chair. And, Sandy Watson’s “Noel Cookies” are an everlasting reminder of her mother.

If you don’t like to spend the holiday in the kitchen, several neighborhood restaurants are open on Christmas Eve with special menus: Bijoux, Buca di Beppo, Maggiano’s at NorthPark, Peak Wood Fired Grille, and more.

Although it’s too late to order holiday feasts from Celebration Market, the market still is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Christmas Eve for other last-minute treats.

Eatzi’s is open until 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Empire Baking Company offers its popular pecan ring available for special order on Dec. 23 and 24. You also can score the bakery’s gingerbread, stollen and cranberry paisano loaf.
