The Lamplighter School is known for nurturing green thumbs. Each year, students in the Early Childhood program host a farmers market, where they sell vegetables they grew on campus. Thanks to Jack Herz, who graduated from Lamplighter in 2012, that enterprise will continue to thrive.
Herz “recently chose Lamplighter as the recipient of his [cumulative] Eagle Scout project by building raised garden beds” near the Early Childhood classrooms.
“Our Pre-K teachers will be using the raised gardens to grow their farmers market vegetables closer to their classrooms, allowing for more frequent visits,” Director of Early Childhood, Judith Mullens, says.
It’s not uncommon for Lamplighter alumni to instigate service projects at their alma mater — Herz is the third Eagle Scout to do so.
“It is a true testament to the strong foundation Lamplighter builds for students and the connections the school fosters when students want to give back to their beloved community,” Assistant Head for Academics, Vicki Raney, says. “Jack did an amazing job in such a short time! That was a big project and it looks great. I know that Pre-K will love having gardens closer to their classrooms.”
