In 2014, Dr. Adam Briggle, a philosophy professor at the University of North Texas, helped lead the Frack-Free Denton campaign. Thanks in part to his efforts, the city “voted to ban the use of hydraulic fracturing within their city limits.” But that wasn’t the end of the story.

According to the Texas Tribune, “Just hours after Denton residents voted to ban hydraulic fracturing, the Texas General Land Office and the state’s biggest petroleum group fired off separate legal challenges to the new rule.”

Earlier this year, Governor Abbott passed a law that overturned Denton’s fracking ban and “curtailed local control of oil and gas activities.”

Briggle will stop by the University Park Public Library in the Plaza at Preston Center this Saturday to discuss the controversy. He’ll also talk about his new book, “A Field Philosopher’s Guide to Fracking.”

The lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the Park Cities/Central Dallas Democrats.
