For the first time since 1961, a Dallas ISD student has won an individual state championship, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Hillcrest sophomore Anne Gilliam won the state 5A girls singles state championship in tennis. The last Dallas ISD student to win an individual state championship also attended Hillcrest — Lynn Haines in 1961..

Gilliam told the DMN the victory was a battle to the end, with her opponent from Austin Vandergrift, Tyler Duncum, splitting the first two of three sets and then playing through a tie-breaker in the third set after Duncum had jumped out to a 5-1 lead.

“It was nerve-wracking playing, but I kept my composure and I just kept playing,” Gilliam told the DMN. “I’m a sophomore, and I hope I get the chance to do it again my junior and senior year.”

Gilliam’s coach at Hillcrest is Diana Davis.
