See the best of what the State Fair of Texas has to offer before you even step foot on the fairgrounds. The DeGolyer Library exhibit at SMU’s Fondren Library Center chronicles the state fair’s 130-year history and displays 60 photographs by Lynn Lennon, who documented the fair from 1984-1993. The exhibit also spotlights vintage items from the first state fair in 1886, a felt hat signed by former president Franklin D. Roosevelt’s children and other items from the George W. Cook Dallas/Texas Image Collection. The free exhibit at 6414 Robert S. Hyer Lane is open from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday, and it will remain open during the week until mid-December.

If you’re looking to improve your artistic skills, the Meadows Museum will host a Drawing from the Masters class this Sunday from 1:30-3 p.m. Artist Ian O’Brien will discuss several drawing techniques as the class explores the museum’s galleries. While this event is free with admission, spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. It is recommended that participants are at least 15 years old and bring their own sketchpad and pencils. Located at 5900 Bishop Blvd., the museum offers the class roughly twice a month.

This Saturday, the Frontiers of Flight Museum will celebrate women in aviation at Museum Day Live!. In addition to kids’ activities from 10 a.m.-noon, an Amelia Earhart impersonator will speak about her life as the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Entry to the museum at 6911 Lemmon Ave. is free with Museum Day Live! tickets, which are available here.
