SMU students may rejoice that a new hangout is set to fill the void Nodding Donkey left when the college bar closed this past spring.

Seven Five Patio Bar is slated to open in February 2017 in the spot at SMU Boulevard that Nodding Donkey once occupied. According to CultureMap, Aaron Morrison purchased the space after selling his Plano-based bar Lantern St. Grill, and much of the menu will be modeled after his previous venture.

“There’ll be pizza, burgers, wings, Cuban sandwiches, and our signature dish, beer-battered fried mushrooms,” he told CultureMap. “It’ll be a nice place but with a dive bar sensibility, in that we’ll do happy hours, special events, and things like karaoke. We’ll just be a nice neighborhood bar.”

That dive bar sensibility translates into the bar’s beer selection, which foregoes craft beer in favor of 24 basic and local beers on tap.

Seven Five follows a standard success formula, but college students will be appreciative that its kitchen remains open until the bar closes at 2 a.m. And the gigantic, recently constructed patio may set it apart, especially since it wraps around two sides of the building.
