When it became clear local businesses were not receiving the attention corporate box stores were given on Black Friday, American Express launched Small Business Saturday, encouraging people to support mom-and-pop shops across the country.

Brad Schweig, of Sunnyland Furniture, then launched ShopLocalDFW.com to promote independent businesses in 2011. Two years later, more than 70 retailers participated across Dallas-Fort Worth.

Here in Preston Hollow, several local businesses have planned incentives for community members to “shop small” this weekend.

Formal wear shop Terry Costa, 12817 Preston Road suite 138, will take an additional 50 percent off of sale items. Bridal gowns will be on sale for $99, and dresses will be on sale for $5-$20. The After Thanksgiving Sale begins at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Ken’s Man’s Shop, located at Preston Royal Village, will offer a sale on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Select items will be marked down by 25-40 percent.

Larger than Life Resale, at the Preston Valley Shopping Center, will have a progressive sale on Friday.

Hollywood Feed, at Preston Oaks, will offer special promotions to members of its email list.

The Jewish Community Center of Dallas, 7900 Northaven Road, plans to offer 50 percent off its membership costs on Friday.

Preston Hollow neighbor Renee Rhyner’s online shop is taking 30 percent off its entire inventory.
