Demolition is underway at Valley View Mall, with progress to come in the way of Beck Ventures’ 70-acre mixed-use development.

The first building to go was Macy’s, previously Foley’s and Sanger Harris, along with its striking mosaic mural.

Dallas-based architect Brenda Stubel created the mural in 1973. She and SMU’s head of community outreach, Suzanne Massey, made efforts to save the mural, but it turned out to be too expensive. Estimates for moving it came to about $200,000, according to the Dallas Morning News.

“We tried to everything we could,” the building’s owner, Rich Enthoven, told the News in December. “But the mural cannot be saved.”

There are still Sanger Harris murals at Town East and Red Bird malls. Here is a detailed story about the murals from Texas Architect magazine.
