UPDATE:

Lori Kirkpatrick

Lori Kirkpatrick cinched a 294 vote lead in the District 2 race of Dallas ISD board of trustees, but it was just shy of the 50.01 percent needed to avoid a runoff election against incumbent Dustin Marshall next month.

The Lakewood Elementary mom was seen by many as a bit of a dark horse candidate against Marshall’s well-established fundraising track record, plus support from his former rival Mita Havlick. But Kirkpatrick came out swinging, quickly fixating her campaign on the controversial issue of school vouchers.

But if history is any indicator, the June 10 runoff election could be a nail-biter, last year just 42 votes separated Marshall from challenger Havlick. In a city with historically low voter turnout, a mere vote or two can make all the difference. In yesterday’s election, 7.8 percent of the city’s registered voters came out to vote.

Going to show the power of a single vote, the race for Dallas ISD board of trustees is separated by just 18 votes, with incumbent Dustin Marshall in the lead. Challenger Lori Kirkpatrick still has a chance to pull ahead as precinct reports start piling in. This story will be updated when more results are available.
