A healthy dose of Southern hospitality

Nathan Brasher and his father, Tim, were on the hunt for a healthy restaurant that also satisfied their cravings for comfort food.

When the father-son duo didn’t find any neighborhood dining spots that met their standards, the former Coconut’s Fish Café owners traded seafood for home-style cooking and opened Texas Scratch Kitchen.

“I had the idea for the concept,” Brasher says. “We had an in for the space. Everything just worked out.”

Healthy comfort food sounds contradictory, Brasher admits, but the two aren’t always mutually exclusive. Menu items range from braised short ribs and chicken fried steak to wild salmon and Southwestern Caesar salad.

“We try to have these healthy options, but sometimes you throw it out the window and get what you want,”

he says.

The Brashers introduced Texas Scratch Kitchen to the community a year ago. Now that they’ve found theirfooting, they want the restaurant to be a neighborhood hangout space that encourages conversation. That’s why there’s no dress code, the music plays quietly and they’re constantly seeking feedback.

“We’re not going to be the ones stuck in our ways,” he says.

Did you know: Most of owner Tim Brasher’s career has been in business, not the culinary world. He’s been the CEO of La Perla and Bell Automotive Products.
