This post was updated Monday to include new information from the City of Dallas.

Preston Hollow is home to Dallas’ first emergency shelter for Hurricane Harvey evacuees.

Since the hurricane-turned-tropical storm barreled through southeast Texas, the City of Dallas has partnered with the American Red Cross to open shelters throughout the city. Walnut Hill Recreation Center is the first to house evacuees.

As many as 500 people could stay at the recreation center, City Councilwoman Jennifer Gates wrote in a statement Friday to neighbors.

By Sunday, 290 people were sleeping at the Walnut Hill Recreation Center, which was deemed “at capacity,” according to a City of Dallas news release. South Dallas’ Tommie Allen Recreation Center and East Dallas’ Samuel Grand Recreation Center have opened their doors, too.

Residents seeking to help can donate clothing, nonperishable foods, toiletries and hygiene products to Dallas County Volunteer Organization Active Disaster.  Baby formula, baby wipes, bottles and diapers also are needed. The organization has a drop-off location set up at 15660 N. Dallas Parkway.
