A decent-sized crowd of neighbors, community leaders, city officials and panting pooches braved the 90 + degree weather today to mark the start of the Northaven Trail construction.
When complete, the trail will serve as a major east-west corridor in the Dallas Bike Plan. The first phase will run along Northaven beside the Oncor easement extending from Valleydale to Preston. It will take about six months to finish. Eventually, the trail will connect to the Cottonwood, White Rock Creek and reach all the way to Denton Drive, making it about 8 miles long.
The city proposed the trail in Spring 2009 and unveiled the design plans in September. It’s funded through the 2006 Capital Improvements bond package, and there was some money left over for some extra amenities. At the groundbreaking ceremony, the Friends of the Northaven Trail provided a closer look at those extras: bike racks with aesthetic some appeal, solar powered trash compactors, water bottle filling stations, nice-looking mile markers and a bike repair station.

The snow on the ground had melted and the streets were finally dry, but W. T. White Young Life Club imported snow for a planned snowball fight at its first meeting of the semester Monday night. More than 100 students have consistently attended meetings this year – the most in more than a decade – which are held on Mondays at 7:57 p.m. at Grace Bible Church. W. T. White Young Life provides an opportunity for students in the area to get together for high-energy, action-packed fun. Young Life’s mission is “Introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith.”
The W.T. White Cabarellas, along with the Thomas Jefferson Liberty Belles, performed during the Super Bowl halftime show Sunday. If you haven’t seen them, check out these photos on Dallas ISD’s Facebook page.

The Lamplighter School held its fall carnival “Ode to Oz” Friday, which transformed the campus in Emerald City for the theme, “There’s No Place Like Lamplighter”. The event included several whimsical attractions like the yellow brick road slide, the flying monkey zipline, the Tin Man’s laser tag and the ruby slipper salon. Among other treats, the munchkin land bake sale offered several goodies.
Here’s a slideshow of some submitted photos from the carnival, co-chaired by Sharon Pfaff and Laurie Darlak.
