Ever wondered how and why your street came upon its name? We have an answer in this quarter’s Home & Heritage magazine. From history to landmark to whim to family, the street names in our neighborhood lay claim to a bit of each.

Did you know, for example, that Hillcrest Road takes its name from a rise in the road near SMU? Or that Northwest Highway originally was the primarty method of reaching Wichita Falls, which perhaps not so coincidentally is northwest of Dallas?

So much of our neighborhood’s history and lore can be traced back to the Caruth family, with their once-omnipresent ownership of virtually all of the land north of downtown Dallas. Street names in the neighborhood are no exception, and it’s interesting to note the family’s role in shaping not only the topography of our neighborhood but also its identification.

There’s more to the story of our neighborhood street names, and you’ll find it all right here in this quarter’s Home & Heritage magazine.

Also in this month’s issue:

  • Discover how two neighborhood women turned $50 in stamps and $12 a month for rented clothes racks into one of the country’s pre-eminent clothing resale shops. Who would have thought the term “gently used” could affect so many lives.
  • Dustin Hoffman, Rod Stewart, Led Zepplin, Troy Aikman, Kenny Rogers and George W. Bush – what do they all have in common? They’ve all stopped by for a meal prepared by a neighborhood restauranteur known simply by his first name.
  • Meet a family new to our neighborhood whose home is literally overrun with art from throughout the world, including a representation of Texas artists.

And you’ll also find our regular complement of information about neighborhood gatherings and events, interesting people, notable businesses and area history.

Thanks for taking the time this summer to read our magazine – you’re joining more than 200,000 other neighborhood residents who regularly read our magazines in the Park Cities, Preston Hollow, Lakewood and Lake Highlands.

And if you can spare a moment, let us know how we’re doing and what else you would like to read about in our next quarterly issue, coming in September.
