Been praying for a nearby place where you can eat good food but don’t have to get dressed up to do it? Seems a number of folks in our neighborhood have, and many of them, based on the lines you’ll find on a Friday night, have found it in the Flying Fish.

The Preston Center spot serves a variety of fresh seafood, and though much of it is fried, you can also get four types of grilled fish, along with crab legs, raw oysters and boiled crawfish (in season).

The Fish is a fun, casual spot to bring the family, with fish-related paraphernalia all around and a Liars’ Wall, where diners can post photos of themselves with the big catch.

And here’s another answer to your prayers – finally, a big way to get rid of that Big Mouth Billy Bass your significant other thinks is so darn cute. Bring one in, let them put it on the wall, and you get a free catfish basket, along with an adoption certificate so you’ll know we’ll be well-cared for

WEEE LOVE A PARADE!

Though it’s been around for 10 years, this neighborhood Fourth of July event is known simply as “the neighborhood parade.” After all, who needs an official-sounding name for something that is so looked forward to that nearly 300 people show up for it every year? It’s organized by the Preston Royal Women’s Club and the Hillcrest Forest Neighborhood Association, and starts in front of Kramer Elementary School. It includes the usual elements of neighborhood parade-dom: kids on decorated bikes, trikes, scooters and cars, patriotic-looking pets and, according to organizer Tracey Mott, even the occasional chicken (it did happen one year). The best part? Once everyone is good and sweaty from the Texas summer heat, the fire department guys drop a tank of water on anyone willing to assemble for a drenching. For tamer types, the Kramer PTA will serve refreshingly cold lemonade. Sunday, July 4, at 10 a.m. Kramer Elementary School, 7131 Midbury Dr.
