In Los Angeles , Grauman’s Chinese Theatre immortalizes actors through handprints. In Preston Hollow this summer, the Kramer Playground Project gave individuals and businesses the chance to forever leave their mark on our neighborhood through bricks.

The Kramer Elementary PTA continues a campaign offering engraved bricks to individuals, groups, clubs and businesses that has helped build a new community playground at the school. Through the program, the PTA hopes to raise at least $20,000.

The bricks, which are sold for either $50 for a 4-by-8 inch brick or $100 for an 8-by-8 inch brick, make up the “Pathway of Knowledge”, a walkway that separates the equipment for younger kids and the equipment for older kids.

While some bricks simply state an individual’s or business’ name, other bricks have messages to friends or families. One brick already purchased will display a message to the family dog.

“It is a nice way to commemorate students, friends and family as well as being aesthetic,” says Kimberly Sloan, Kramer PTA’s public relations representative.

The engraved brick walkway is the second phase in the construction of the new playground and park. Phase one included the installation of a $60,000 playground activity center and a comfort pavilion with three picnic tables, seating areas and canopies. Phase three will be the building of the “Principal’s Courtyard.”

The PTA expects to continue to offer blank bricks as long as they are available and will continue replacing them with engraved ones throughout the fall.

“The new playground will benefit all children and families in the Hillcrest Forest neighborhood,” says Laura Asay, Kramer PTA president.
