HOW SWEET IT IS

Beth Didion has a sweet spot for art — literally. She has been baking and hand-decorating cookies for several years now. “There are cookies that are really pretty, but they’re like rocks,” Didion says. “There’s no reason why they can’t be pretty and taste good.” So with that in mind, she started Cookie Arts, an artisan cookie bakery, about nine months ago out of her Preston Hollow home. When someone places an order, she custom designs cookies for the event, whether it’s a baby shower or a business open house. Before baking, she sketches the cookie design on paper to get a clear idea of what the cookies will look like. “Every cookie I do is custom made,” Didion says. Her cookies cost anywhere from $2 to $4 apiece, depending on the time invested, she says. In fact, the most expensive cookie so far was $80. And with all that cookie baking, how does she keep from getting too doughy? “I actually lose weight when I have a big order,” Didion says. “When they look really good, I don’t want to eat it!” Thankfully, her customers don’t feel the same way.
