The String Bean can best be summed up as small town food and friendliness in the big city — but that’s not all that makes it a top destination for the lunch crowds. For 30 years, it has been variety, and a lot of it, that has attracted the hungry masses. While co-owner and manager Ron Morse says they specialize in “home-style country dishes,” it doesn’t mean they’re limited to that. They also serve up authentic Mexican, Italian and Cajun dishes — and in honor of St. Patrick’s Day this month, they’ll be offering corned beef and cabbage. Because the menu is so varied, so are the lunch specials. In fact, the specials change daily but the price is always less than $10. The only recurring lunch special is the popular chicken and dumplings, which as Morse warns, “are only served until they run out — and people get here early for those.” Other favorites include chicken fried steak, stacked enchiladas, lasagna and seafood gumbo.
