Not much has changed at Mario and Alberto in its 30 years. But neighborhood folks seem to like it that way, and after one meal there, it’s easy to see why. The margaritas are always stiff and not too sweet, the dimly lit dinning room is intimate yet relaxed, and the menu is varied but not overwhelming. It’s a place where Tex-Mex lovers and Mexican soul food fans alike can dine. There’s the standard queso-laden chalupas, chimichangas and chile rellenos, as well as more sophisticated dishes such as the Puntas de Filete al Ajillo — grilled pieces of filet mignon sautéed in olive oil, garlic and fresh herbs served with Mexican-style fried potatoes and salad. Portions are pretty hearty, but if you save room for desserts, there’s traditional flan and sopapillas, which pair well with the coffee Mexicano, a cup coffee made with Kahlua and tequila.
