Disabled American Veterans Big D Chapter 57 meets every first Saturday at 1 p.m. at 8630 Thurgood Lane for discussions and lunch. Meetings include various activities, presenters and topics. The group is also informed about legislative matters of interest at federal, state and local levels. All disabled veterans are welcome. The SPCA of Texas runs an injured animal rescue ambulance service to help strays. SPCA will respond to calls in our neighborhood from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Field officers will evaluate injured animals and take them to the SPCA, Highland Park Animal Clinic or an emergency clinic for treatment. 214.651.7387.

Hillcrest High School calculus teacher Loucia Mavrokordatos recently received the Texas Excellence Award for Outstanding Teachers from The University of Texas College of Education. Twelve teachers are selected annually, and awards include a cash prize.

Jesuit students Ben Paredes, Preston Herrmann, Scott Puckett, Blake Tomnitz, Scott Palmer, and Alex Sakovich were selected to participate in the High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program for a one-week internship this summer. The students were selected by their respective state representatives and will travel to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where they will be part of a team that is designing a mission to Mars.

 

Hillcrest High School sophomore Luke Parks designed, built and installed four athletic training tables for use by sports teams at Hillcrest High School and Franklin Middle School. He is a member of Troop 72 and the son of Martha and Dave Parks.

 

Hillcrest High School Valedictorian Nevena Rakonjac will attend Princeton University this fall to study biomedical engineering. Hillcrest High School Salutatorian Lisa Vine will attend the University of Texas at Austin this fall to study business.

 

W.T. White High School valedictorian Kimberly Gonzales will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a declared major in engineering. W.T. White High School salutatorian Kenneth Nguyen will attend University of Texas at Dallas with a declared major in computer science.

 

Ursuline Academy student Carolyn McLaughlin was recently selected to be featured in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” She is the daughter of Emma and John McLaughlin.

 

Jesuit High School Student Joe Wunderlick won the Robert T. Mason Award for sportsmanship/ swimming and diving. He is the son of Sue and George Wunderlick.
