When Annie Davis signed up for a sculpting class more than 20 years ago, she ended up with way more than a teacher. “After a while, she got to be the teacher’s pet,” says George, then the teacher and now her husband. A few years after that initial class, the two dated and eloped in Portugal. Today, the Preston Hollow residents live and create art together. “Some people would have a tendency to compete,” George says. “We don’t. We help each other out. It’s a matter of love. When you love someone, you want to see them do well.” Since Annie enrolled in the sculpting class more than 30 years ago, she has been working with any material she can get her hands on: clay, cast stone, bronze, terra cotta, metal and even glass. “When I took my first sculpture class, I just thought: Oh, I’ve come home,” Annie says. She is perhaps best known for her portraits of children, which are in gardens, homes and businesses throughout Dallas. And in fact, she recently made an instructional DVD on how to sculpt a child’s head. “I just think it’s really fun sculpting people. Every person has something so special, so unique.” She also enjoys working with George, whom she says is a wonderful teacher. Art became his hobby more than 40 years ago when he was a petroleum geologist. He would find jewels and petrified wood while working in the field, so he decided to incorporate that into his art by learning to silversmith and make jewelry. He took a sculpting class, thinking it would help his craft, and became hooked. “First of all, it’s a challenge. And secondly, I find beauty in everyone — no matter if they’re young or old, fat or skinny. Everyone is beautiful. Everyone is unique.” George has a book, “Proportional Guide to the Figure,” and an instructional DVD that explains how to sculpt a human body.
