I was just reminded that the first week in May is Teacher Appreciation WeekWeek. In my tenure as a school volunteer, I’ve seen various degrees of fanfare around this occasion and encourage PTAs to not be discouraged by limited resources. The best program a parent friend developed was this: Monday students wear the teacher’s favorite color; Tuesday they bring her favorite flower, Wednesday her favorite soft drink, Thursday her favorite candy bar and Friday a personal note of thanks. PTA simply surveyed teachers and listed their favorite items for parents. They also collected old vases or colored glass bottles and decorated them with ribbon to hold the flowers.

If you’re a business owner who could donate numerous items of appreciation, your local school would certainly welcome you.

My dream though would be to give every teacher a lobster dinner or equivalent because, by golly, they deserve to be treated royally. So I challenge all BackTalkers to purchase a gift certificate from their favorite restaurant and deliver it to their neighborhood school.
