It all started in 1956. That’s the year Frank Nuccio’s father began serving pizza at his downtown lounge, eventually converting it into a full-on pizzeria and moving it to the corner of Preston and Royal. It was a move that panned out well for us here in Preston Hollow. For nearly 50 years, Pizza by Marco has been keeping neighbors coming back for that Sicilian-style crispy crust and secret recipe sauce. “I use a family recipe to make all the pizza crusts and sauce myself. I’ve never even taught the employees how to make it.” You can create your pizza just about any way you like it — including on a wheat crust, or with vegan toppings. And keep an eye out for gluten-free pizza, which should be on the menu within the next year. Stop in any day for lunch, and get a slice of pizza and a drink for just $2. While pizza is certainly the big draw here, there are also a few pastas and new salads, like the pecan salad and the feta salad. Nuccio, a Hillcrest High School graduate, still lives in Preston Hollow and says this winter he’ll start delivering throughout the neighborhood — something that hasn’t been done in years. If you dine in, however, you’re welcome to bring a bottle of wine, and you might just spot a homegrown hero or two. “There are two brothers in particular who come in here whenever they’re in town. They’re always very smart about it. They come in around 9 when the rush is over.”
