Hillcrest drama students Katie Budge, Jeremey Dickie and Tom Lewis won All Star Cast during a recent district UIL theater competition. Hillcrest student Klarice McCarron also won Best Actress.

Hillcrest seniors Aden Abiye and Lauren Robinowitz are winners of the 2009 Superintendent’s Scholarship Award. Each recipient will receive a $2,000 scholarship toward a degree at the university and/or college of their choice.

Karen Puckett, a teacher at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, was selected as one of four Dallas ISD teacher of the year finalists. A committee of judges selected the semifinalists and finalists based on a number of criteria including the ability to inspire a drive for excellence in a diverse student population; commitment to professional development and contributions to the teaching profession; awareness of current issues in education; level of community involvement; and quality of interactions with parents and peers.

Franklin Middle School principal Ronald Jones has been named the new principal of Hillcrest High School. He took over his new post in May.

Marsh Middle School theater students recently performed the DISD Pre-UIL One-Act Play Festival held at Garcia Middle School. Students Laney Morgan and Joseph Stewart were awarded Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and Kimberly Gutierrez was awarded All-Star Cast.

Three neighborhood students, Chase McLean of Hillcrest High School, Alexander Herbelin of St. Mark’s School of Texas, and Michael Cole of Jesuit College Preparatory, have accepted appointments to two of our nation’s service academies. McLean and Herbelin will attend the Naval Academy, and Cole will attend the Merchant Marine Academy. U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions says he appointed the young men based on their outstanding academic performance, personal fitness and moral character.
