No complaints about a lack of interest in running for DISD trustee jobs this time around: There are three races Nov. 3, and there are four candidates for each race.
Sure to be a topic of the race is the postponement of what should have been a May election until November, and even then the election is only being held after it appeared that the board had violated state law in extending the terms of trustees in the three districts. We can expect Ellis and Flores, incumbents who voted in favor of extending their terms, to take heat for that decision. But both are dedicated trustees who, while they have completely different styles, have worked hard to do what they believe is best for the board; now voters will get a chance to pass judgement on their decisions.

In District 1, currently represented by Edwin Flores and including W.T. White High School in Preston Hollow/North Dallas, candidates includes Flores, retired salesman Melvin Cannon, homemaker Kyle Renard and freelance Linus Spiller.
In District 3, where incumbent Leigh Ann Ellis represents DISD schools on Dallas’ east side, Ellis will face consultant Penny Anderly, real estate broker Beatrice Alba Martinez and television producer Bruce Parrott (husband of former District 3 trustee Lois Parrott).
In District 9, which is represented by retiring trustee Ron Price and includes Lakewood’s Woodrow Wilson High School, candidates include education consultant Sally Cain (wife of former State Sen. David Cain, Circle of Support executive director Bernadette Nutall, retired administrator Dr. Juanita Wallace, and self-described "self-finance/fitness/security" Rossi Walter.
The job pays nothing, the grief factor is off the chart, and it’s a fairly safe assumption that if elected, your political career will be all but over if history is any guide. But we need good people to run our schools, and at least we have some people to choose from this year.
