I have a friend who swears by the boot camp approach to working out. She tried unsuccessfully for a year to get me into one of these classes — but the thought of doing pushups in the summer heat and/or blustery winter cold didn’t sound remotely enjoyable.

The JCC, however, is offering an out-of-the-ordinary form of boot camp that I could actually see myself liking: aquatic boot camp. The majority of the workout time is spent in the indoor pool, so you’re spared from the elements — but don’t color it water aerobics. Justin Bradshaw, a former U.S. Army Deep Sea Diver, designed the program based on his military training. You can expect things like swimming laps, underwater sprints and treading water with weights. Most people burn anywhere from 500 to 1,200 calories during one of the hour-long classes, and all you need to get started is a swimsuit.
