When I swing by our neighborhood La Madeline, I almost always spot a neighbor or two that I know — especially if it’s the morning. This is the go-to coffee meeting spot, thanks to those bottomless cups and central location.

But should you want some breakfast with that coffee, this place doesn’t disappoint. I’m a big fan of the ‘Smart Choice’ menu, particularly the 300-calorie spinach omelette, and the 150-calorie strawberries Ramanoff. If you’re not watching your waistline, go for one of the quiches. My favorite is the Florentine: eggs, spinach and melted Swiss cheese in a delicate pastry shell. There are also dozens of morning pastries to pick from, as well as several American breakfast combos, like sausage, eggs, and hash browns.

Breakfast here typically runs me about $10, and the portions are always plenty big. Plus, you get all the free fresh-baked bread you’d like with your meal. If you sign up for their electronic newsletter, you can also score some pretty good deals. I got a free bowl of soup this week, for example. And they’re about to unveil a new menu, so keep an eye out for some new selections.
