Andrea Melendez has been awarded the Eric Louis Brown Scholarship for $5,000, which honors a DISD student-athlete each year.

Melendez had one of the highest GPAs on the Hillcrest girl’s basketball team, and received high scores on her college entrance exams. The first-generation college student has been accepted to Concordia University in Austin and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton. She plans to pursue a nursing degree.

In her application for the scholoarship, Melendez wrote about how teamwork is meaningful not only in sports but in academics.

The award is named for student-athlete Eric Louis Brown who died after a football practice while attending David W. Carter High School. DISD awarded the first scholarship in 2008 and plans to continue for the next 10 years
