People across the country will honor fallen soldiers on Monday, but one hero touches hearts closer to home. U.S. Army Sgt. Greg Owens, a 2002 Hillcrest grad, died in Afghanistan last year after an improvised explosive device detonated.
Owens, an accomplished drum major at Hillcrest, was recently honored by the Panther Band Boosters with a scholarship in his name to recognize band students who have overcome adversity. The Greg Owens Memorial Scholarship was awarded to senior David Hernandez this year at the annual Spring Band Concert.
A permanent plaque and photograph will be placed in the band hall to memorialize Owens and remind others of his sacrifice.
