As we told you earlier, the 80-year-old owner of Roy’s Natural Market at Preston and Royal is retiring and he’s having a week-long retirement party in the store 2-4 p.m. through Friday, sharing memories from the 30-year-old Dallas institution. And upon his departure, the store will close its doors early next month.

DMN columnist Cheryl Hall has a pretty comprehensive profile on Beard, a “health food pioneer,” and if you’ve frequented the store like many residents even outside of Preston Hollow, it’s an interesting read. Heck, the man was all over “organic” before most people even knew what that word really meant.

There’s no word on who will take over the empty storefront after Beard leaves. But as for satisfying the health-food need, Beard and his family are recommending Natural Grocers, which will open at Preston and Forest in late August.
