So says this CNBC blog, which quotes Dallas resident Diane Cheatham, owner of Urban Edge Developers (we interviewed her for this story about the Urban Reserve development). Cheatham says the average home her company builds is now 2,200 square feet, as opposed to 2,500 in 2005, “which was considered small for Dallas back then.”

The CNBC post also gives historical context: “1,200 square feet was the average home size in America in the 1960s. That grew to 1,710 square feet in the 1980s and 2,330 square feet in the 2000s.” The story also attempts to answer the question: What do we do with all these McMansions that have already been built?

Considering that publisher Rick Wamre has already told us that smaller homes are trumping McMansions in this economy, I guess this information is not surprising. (By the way, does anyone want a McMansion on clearance?)
