And, it isn’t just a local business offering a discount program for nonprofits – as much as we love to seize those opportunities to do our part easily.

But for one company, GiveSmart, giving back is it’s main function, and as the holidays approach, they’re looking for more organizations to support, including local schools. The business allows people to shop online and have 2-10 percent of their bill go toward a nonprofit of their choice. The nonprofit simply registers with GiveSmart for free.

Those currently benefiting from the online portal include nonprofits from across the Metroplex (Wednesday’s Child, Kidney Texas Inc.,) but also neighborhood organizations like the Jewish Community Center.

Users can shop a slew of major stores through the business, including Target, Walmart, Amazon.com and Starbucks.

A former Preston Hollow resident, Sally Dehm, who is quite enthusiastically returning to her hometown from Austin,  told me company since she has just started a job there.

“Last year during the holiday shopping season, we raised thousands of dollars for these organizations at no cost to anyone,” she says. “Most people do some form of online shopping during the holidays, and there is absolutely no reason why we can’t ensure this free money goes to our community.”
