The Hillcrest Lacrosse program, which includes players from all over Dallas, will hold try-outs for the Spring 2011 season, beginning Dec. 5. Actually, they’re being called “try it out” dates as the organization is looking to increase participation in the sport. The sessions will run 2-3:30 p.m. Dec. 5, 12 and 19 at the field near Franklin Middle School Stadium at Airline and Lakehurst.

Centered in our neighborhood, the program encompasses players from across DISD and private schools that don’t offer lacrosse. Boys in grades 4-12 are eligible to play. Participating schools include Hillcrest, W.T. White, Kramer Elementary, Preston Hollow Elementary and Withers Elementary as wells those outside Preston Hollow like Townview and Bishop Lynch.

The season will begin in March, and all home games will be played at the Franklin stadium at Meadow and Hillcrest. If you’re new to the sport, the program’s website has a facts page that answers all types of questions from where to buy gear to how lacrosse compares with other contact sports. A beginner gear package, which includes a stick, gloves, a helmet and pads, costs about $225, and the team fee is $275, which includes uniforms. However, no boy will be turned down because of financial need, according to program leaders.

For now, during the “try it out” dates, you can borrow equipment and learn all there is to know about the sport from the coaches themselves. Hillcrest High School also will host a lacrosse clinic 9 a.m.-noon Dec. 18-19 for current players who want to improve their skills. Professional coaches from Rogue Lacrosse will lead the clinic, which is open to all boys in grades 3-12. Registration is $99. For details, email info@roguelacrosse.com.
