You might not expect to find brownies (good ones) at taco joint. But, then again, Torchy’s Tacos has never been your typical taco joint.

The Austin-based restaurant, which recently opened its first Dallas location at the northwest corner of Preston and Forest, has begun carrying a new dessert also born out of the capital city — Love Puppies Brownies.

For $2.25 each, they come packaged in seven different cleverly named flavors: Make Mine a Double Chocolate (dark chocolate and more dark chocolate), You Mocha Me Crazy (dark chocolate with ground coffee beans), Peanut Butter Nutcase (dark chocolate and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups), Hunka Hunka Burning Love (with ground peppers), Who Cares About Dinner Mint (dark chocolate with Jr. Mints), Trailer Park Chic (blond brownie with dark chocolate chips and pecans) and Kentucky Screwdriver (dark chocolate with bourbon and orange liqueur).

The key ingredient is dark chocolate — we all know it’s better than milk chocolate, and it’s becoming more and more popular. It has a full cocoa flavor, yet it’s not too sweet. I tried the Hunka Hunka Burning Love, which has a very nice kick at the end. Just make sure you have tall glass of milk nearby. To kick it up a notch, pop these brownies in the microwave for just a few seconds and add some vanilla ice cream.

Love Puppies Brownies are a permanent addition to the Torchy’s menu.
