Hillcrest High School 2002 alumnus Gregory Owens was killed in the line of duty back in July 2009 while serving in Afghanistan, but the fallen U.S. Army Sergeant will not be forgotten.

Owens was a drum major in the HHS Panther Band and by the time students return from Christmas break, a permanent plaque will hang in the band hall, honoring Owens’ sacrifice. The Band Boosters also established a scholarship in his name, the first of which was awarded last spring.

Owens was among 38 soldiers in his brigade killed after an improvised explosive device detonated. He was 24 years old. The fallen soldiers were memorialized earlier this year in Fort Drum, N.Y. And this memorial video also pays tribute to the heroes.
