The vision for a Hillcrest Alumni Association has been on the table for more than a year now with exciting ideas for establishing scholarships and mentoring programs to enrich education for current students. But so far, few grads have jumped on board.

We wrote about the effort in our March 2010 issue. Since then, Amie Moyer, president of the school’s Site-Based Decision Making Committee, has taken the lead in tracking down Hillcrest alumni, relying mostly on the power of Facebook. The page has lots of activity with nearly 2,400 followers, but only 10 people showed up to the first mixer in February at Mattito’s.

“We reconnected and talked about a lot of things,” Moyer says. “We had people from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’90s. We just need to have more of these events.”

With enough participation, Moyer can establish a database of contact information, and the group could begin to select officers and have a presence at school parades and football games.

“I think it’s really cool for the kids to see these people in the stands,” Moyer says.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
The next alumni event is 6-8 p.m. April 28 at Blue Mesa Grill at Belt Line and the Tollway. To learn more, check out the Hillcrest Alumni Association Facebook page or contact Amie Moyer at 214.450.5646 or email her.
