Students at E.D. Walker Middle School got their hands dirty today, cultivating their new garden funded by a $5,000 grant from Lowe’s Toolbox for Education program.

The school received the grant back in January among 450 other campuses in the country. Jeri Kitner, technology specialist and program developer at E.D. Walker, says the goal is to create a living laboratory, bringing science and social studies classes outside. Students can now receive hands-on learning about composting, earthworms, butterflies and various plant species.

The garden occupies the courtyard in front of the school, which not too pretty beforehand, Kitner says. There’s an herb garden in the center with trees and shrubs being planted around it. The school has another garden at the northwest corner of the campus.
