The Hockaday School hosts this year’s 5th annual North Texas First Lego League Championship Robotics Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 12, and you can watch part of it live. The robotics portion of the tournament is free and open to the public.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science partnered with First (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) for the tournament, in which some very smart students ages 9-14 team up to create robots that complete missions like bowling, planting a garden and wood working.

Opening ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m. and the robot competition runs from 9:15 a.m.-noon and resumes after a lunch break from 1-3:30 p.m. Closing ceremonies and awards take place from 4:30-5 p.m. The Hockaday School, at 11600 Welch, hosts the event.

This year’s challenge is Seniors Solutions. Each of the 54 teams includes someone age 60 or older, comes up with problems people might confront as they age and creates a solution.

“As a former educator, I recognize that children learn best when they overcome challenges through hands-on learning, project design and experimentation,” says Steve Hinkley, VP of programs at the Perot museum, in a press release. “FLL [First Lego League] and the Championship Robotics Tournament is a truly educational and fun experience that gives these students the opportunity to view science as a process, rather than merely an end result.”
