Residents of Preston Hollow don’t have to travel very far to help out immigrants and refugees in dramatically different socioeconomic circumstances as themselves.

imagesThe Vickery Meadows neighborhood is bounded by Northwest Highway, Royal Lane, Central Expressway, and Skillman/Abrams. 20 different languages are spoken among the approximately 36,000 residents of Vickery Meadows, many of whom are adults that are trying to better themselves by learning English but do not have the means to do so.

In 1997 the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church founded The Vickery Meadows Learning Center non-profit organization. Since then many volunteer teachers have helped meet the demand for literacy education for Vickery Meadows residents.

Volunteers are needed this June to teach a four-day adult literacy class between June 3-27. Volunteer teachers must be at least 18 and able to commit to teach one four-day week (Monday through Thursday session) from 9-11 a.m. All classes are co-taught and no second language or teaching experience is required.

Teacher training and class materials are provided at an orientation class in May. For more information on orientation dates and to sign up to teach in June contact Liz Harling online or by calling 214.265.5057 ext. 102.
