I’ll never forget where I was as I watched the second World Trade Center tower fall on television 12 years ago. It was my senior year of high school, and we spent the rest of the school day watching the horrific aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks unfold on the TV.

Later in the week, my friends and I put American flag stickers on our cars. We were thousands of miles away from the attack, but we wanted to show support — support for our President, our military, and all of the brave police and firefighters that had sacrificed their lives on behalf of their fellow American citizens.

It was a scary time, but I remember feeling closer to family and friends, and hopeful — that no matter what happened next, that the Americans could be so sacrificial and heroic in the face of disaster. It sounds cheesy, but at that time more than ever, I was truly proud to be an American.

This morning, Veterans gathered at the Jewish Community Center to honor those who helped to serve and protect our country on Sept. 11, and who continue to fight for our freedom to this day. Watch the ceremony below:
