Jennifer Staubach Gates is a councilwoman, registered nurse, daughter of Dallas Cowboys great Roger Staubach, mother to three, and as of Monday night, a lifesaver.
While Gates was dining at The Mercury restaurant on Preston and Forest with friends and family Monday night, a waiter rushed by in search of someone that could administer CPR.
A fellow restaurant patron was choking and become unresponsive while employees were attempting to perform the Heimlich maneuver on the man.
Gates then performed CPR on the man, although she wasn’t sure if she was too late. Gates tells the Dallas Morning News:
“I thought he was gone. I thought he’d had a heart attack … and that I wasn’t going to get him back. His eyes were rolled back. It was bad.”
After a few minutes of chest compressions, the diner, who appeared to be in his 80s, regurgitated and regained consciousness. The man was then taken to the hospital and is now doing well, according to the DMN article.
The district 13 councilwoman represents Preston Hollow, but she still likes to renew her nursing license.
In June, she shared with editor Monica Nagy that she worked as a full time nurse for five years over 20 years ago, maintaining that her nursing experience trained her “to pay attention to detail and make informed decisions, which is good training for a councilmember.”
Good training for being a councilmember, and plenty of other situations, too.
