Enjoy free Challah bread and grape juice from The J this Friday

On Friday, the Jewish Community Center is distributing 500 complimentary “Shabbat Bags” to families of all faiths to encourage rest during the holiday season. Each bag will contain Challah bread (a braided loaf of egg bread that is part of the Shabbat meal,) grape juice, candles and a Kiddush — a blessing you can choose to recite over your meal. In Judaism, Shabbat is celebrated beginning sundown on Friday, through sundown on Saturday. It is considered a time to stop working, spend time with family, and to contemplate the spiritual aspects of life. Bags will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bring the kids to the Park Forest library for a reading of the beloved tale,”The Night Before Christmas,” presented by Rochelle Rabouin and Stewart Shelton and accompanied by live music, Saturday, from 11 a.m. to noon. Families are encouraged to share holiday traditions and create a festive bird craft.

Santa descends into Dallas this Sunday afternoon

Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive by airplane this Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. Along with the dramatic arrival of “the big guy,” children can build paper airplanes or paper helicopters and enjoy cookies and drinks, too. Plus, you can take pictures with Santa Claus and a special visitor from “outer space,” or in the cockpit of an airplane, for $5.

Meet your neighbors and enjoy backyard Christmas light displays Sunday night at Holiday Spirit on the Trail, beginning at 6 p.m. on the west side of the Northaven trail at Edgemere. The gathering is hosted by the Friends of Northaven Trail and is open to the community.
