Temple Emanu-El kicks off its annual film series, Cinema Emanu-El, in a couple of weeks. This year features four flicks, each screening Tuesday nights July 8-29 with discussions to follow.
“Zaytoun” chronicles the bond between a Palestinian refugee and the Israeli fighter pilot he helps free from captivity. In “My Australia” a Jewish mother raises her two boys as Catholic for their own protection in post-WWII Poland but is forced to reveal the truth and build a new life in Israel. “Putzel” is an indie comedy about a man who grew up working in a smoked fish emporium in New York’s Upper West Side. The series ends with “Rafting to Bombay” in which the director sets out to make a documentary in Mumbai where his family sought refuge from the Nazis but finds himself caught up in a Pakistani terrorist attack against.
Tickets for the series on sale — $4 for a single show and $12 for a series pass. Screenings include free popcorn, candy, soda and other refreshments.
